A Different Kind of Development

Comunicada fights poverty and gender inequality in Nicaragua from the ground up. We are different from many NGOs: the women who work with Comunicada become leaders, not recipients. It’s a different kind of development, in which women discover their own power in their own communities--and work together to change their lives.

Comunicada’s programs train Nicaraguan women as grassroots leaders primarily to build economic opportunities for themselves and other women. These leaders also provide health education, preserve Nicaragua’s cultural heritage, and strengthen the political participation of Nicaraguan women.

In Spanish, our name is an acronym for our philosophy: Nicaraguan women for self-managed development.

Grassroots Leadership

Comunicada is also unique because we were founded and are managed at the grassroots level. The five women who make up our executive council are community leaders with diverse backgrounds: community development, education, craftwork, microcredit, law, cooperative enterprise, and agriculture. We have worked together in community development and women’s issues for several years, and began the formal process of organizing ourselves as a non-profit in March, 2007.
